First Aid is the immediate assistance given to someone injured or suddenly taken ill suddenly before the arrival of an ambulance, doctor or other appropriately qualified person. The person offering this help to a casualty must act calmly and with confidence, and above all must be willing to offer assistance whenever the need arises. First Aid is a skill based on knowledge, training and experience and a First Aider is someone who has completed a theoretical and practical course and passed a professionally supervised examination (HSE Approved).

Who is suitable to be a First Aider?
The First Aid Regulations 1981 (ACOP revised 1997) Guidance3 (2):10-11 state that First Aiders should be:

  • Reliable
  • Calm in an emergency
  • Able to cope with demands of the study course
  • Free from any condition which may affect their ability to render First Aid
  • Employed in a post which allows them to leave their work to render First Aid in an emergency 
     

Responsibilities of a First Aider are to:

  • Assess a situation quickly and safely, and summon appropriate help
  • Identify, as far as possible, the injury or the nature of the illness affecting the casualty
  • Give early, appropriate and adequate treatment in a sensible order of priority
  • Arrange for the removal of the casualty to hospital, to the care of a doctor, or home
  • Remain with the casualty until handing him or her over to the care of an appropriate person
  • Make and pass on a report, and give further help if required 
                                  

Health & Safety Executive (HSE) First Aid at Work Course (FAW) - (3 days)

 

Employers have an obligation under the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and Approved Code of Practice (ACOP L74) to make adequate and appropriate First Aid provision for their workforce. It is recommended that someone is able to undertake First Aid duties at all times when people are at work. This is a Health & Safety Executive recognised course which fully complies with Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and the Approved Code of Practice (ACOP) L74 guidelines for the qualification of workplace First Aiders.

 

A First Aid at Work (FAW) qualification will make a positive contribution to the safety of your workplace. After qualifying in First Aid at Work (FAW) you'll have the essential skills to handle any First Aid situation, from minor slips and trips to the most serious of incidents.

 

On completion of training, successful candidates should be competent in:

  • understand the role of the first aider including reference to the use of available equipment and the need for recording incidents and actions;
  • understand the importance of basic hygiene in first-aid procedures;
  • assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency;
  • administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious and/or in seizure;
  • administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation;
  • administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded or bleeding and/or in shock;
  • administer first aid to a casualty who is choking;
  • provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries;
  • recognising the presence of major illness and applying general first aid principles in its management.


Candidates should be able to demonstrate the correct first-aid management of:

  • soft tissue injuries;
  • injuries to bones including suspected spinal injuries;
  • chest injuries;
  • burns and scalds;
  • eye injuries including how to irrigate an eye;
  • sudden poisoning and anaphylactic shock.


Course duration is 3 days with realistic scenario based exercises.

 

After successful completion of the course and a final practical assessment, students will be awarded the HSE approved and recognised, First Aid at Work Certificate which is valid for 3 years. This award is also recognised and accepted by the Security Industry Authority (SIA).

Health & Safety Executive (HSE) First Aid at Work Refresher / Requalifier Course - (2 days)

 

This course is for those candidates who hold a FAW Certificate that is about to expire. Your FAW Certificate is valid for 3 years and you must re-qualify beforehand if you want to avoid having to do the full course again.

 

Course contents include:

  • Managing the incident
  • Priorities of First Aid
  • Resuscitation of the casualty
  • Primary survey
  • Secondary survey
  • Blood loss and treating bleeding
  • Treatment of shock
  • Head injuries
  • General discussion on work place injuries

Course duration is 2 days and contains realistic scenario based exercises.

 

After successful completion of the course and a final practical assessment, students will be awarded the HSE approved and recognised, First Aid at Work Certificate which is valid for 3 years. This award is also recognised and accepted by the Security Industry Authority (SIA).

Health & Safety Executive (HSE) Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) Course - (1 day) 

 

This course covers the skills required by a First Aider in the modern workplace and will equip you with the knowledge to deal with First aid emergencies.

On completion of training, successful candidates will be able to:

  • understand the role of the First Aider including reference to the use of available equipment and the need for recording incidents and actions;
  • understand the importance of basic hygiene in First Aid procedures;
  • assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency;
  • administer First Aid to a casualty who is unconscious and/or in seizure;
  • administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation;
  • administer First Aid to a casualty who is wounded or bleeding and/or in shock;
  • administer First Aid to a casualty who is choking;
  • Provide appropriate First Aid for minor injuries.

Course duration is 1 day and contains realistic scenario based exercises.

 

Continuous assessment is used to evaluate the candidates and there is no final practical assessment.

Health & Safety Executive (HSE) First Aid Basic Skills Update / Annual Refresher Course


This course updates and refreshes the skills required by a First Aider in the modern workplace and will equip you with the knowledge to deal with First aid emergencies.

 

On completion of training, candidates will be able to  demonstrate their competence to:

  • Assess the situation in an emergency;
  • Administer First Aid to a casualty who is unconscious and/or in seizure;
  • Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation;
  • AdministerFirst Aid to a casualty who is wounded or bleeding and/or in shock.
  • The course will also include any updates or changes to relevant First Aid procedures.

Course duration is ½ day.

 

Continuous assessment is used to evaluate the candidates and there is no final practical assessment.
