City & Guilds (6302) Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS)

 

This qualification replaces the 7303 Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector and is mandatory for those individuals who wish to enter teaching in the regulated Lifelong Learning Sector (LLS) in England.

 

The purpose of the City & Guilds 6302 (PTTLS) course is to provide individuals with an introduction to teaching and training adult learners. The Award is for new entrants who do not have prior teaching experience or qualifications and especially suits those individuals who are already working within their chosen environment and are wishing to gain official qualifications. Entrants should have an idea of what subject they would like to teach and be aiming to achieve (or have achieved) a qualification and have relevant experience in their skill / subject at the appropriate level. There are no other formal entry requirements.

 

The course includes:.

  • Roles, Responsibilities and Relationships in the Lifelong Learning Sector
  • Understanding Inclusive Learning and Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector
  • Using Inclusive Learning and Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector
  • Principles of Assessment in the Lifelong Learning Sector

The Award may be achieved at Level 3 or Level 4 and this will be negotiated following your initial assessment. Either level will allow learners to progress into employment as teachers / trainers, as well as the following City & Guilds qualifications:

  • Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTTLS)
  • Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTTLS)

The duration of the PTTLS course is 4 days + self-study

City & Guilds 7304 Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS)

 

CTLLS is the acronym for the Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector. It may be offered to pre-service and in-service candidates on a part-time or full-time basis at Level 3 or Level 4. The certificate meets the qualification requirements for the associate teaching role. This award comprise of three mandatory units worth a total of 18 credits on the QCF, and optional unit(s) to a minimum value of 6 credits. The total minimum credit value required of this qualification is 24 credits.

 

If the certificate is achieved prior to progressing to the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector, you will be able to carry forward 15 credits and receive accreditation of prior learning (APL) for the first two units (PTLLS and Planning and Enabling Learning) within CTLLS.

 

The City & Guilds 7304 (CTTLS) course is the next step after successfully completing the City & Guilds 7303 (PTTLS) award. It offers candidates the ability to gain the skills and knowledge required for the ‘associate’ teaching role.

  • Teaching Practice - you will be required undertake a minimum of 30 hours teaching practice. This time falls into your non-contact hours within the programme, and excludes micro-teaching or teaching practice completed as part of the PTLLS unit within CTLLS, or 7303 PTLLS Award. Practice completed for the theory assessment at either level 3 or level 4 for the Planning and Enabling Learning unit is also excluded.
  • Observation Requirement – you will be observed for at least three hours over a minimum of three occasions of your 30 teaching practice hours. Each observation will be for a minimum of 30 minutes and will be in your place of work. Teaching observation excludes observed practice completed as part of the PTLLS unit within CTLLS, or C&G 7303 PTLLS Award. The theory assessment in the Planning and Enabling Learning unit at Level 3 or Level 4, and mentor observations are also excluded.
  • Teaching Practice Portfolio - you will be required to keep one teaching practice portfolio across the full programme. The portfolio should be a concise log of teaching practice undertaken and should include your log of 30 hours teaching and evidence relating to your learners, session planning, delivery and evaluation. It will include at least three observations of your teaching by the course team for at least three hours of their teaching in total. It is recommended that you use the pro formas provided.
  • Reflective Learning Journal – you will be encouraged to write a Reflective Learning Journal from the commencement of the qualification, which encompasses your own teaching and learning practices and at the completion of each day attended throughout the programme. You may use your own journal format during the course or the pro forma provided.
  • IfL Registration – It is recommended that you register with the IfL (Institute for Learning) as near to the commencement of the programme as possible. Full details and guidance are available from www.ifl.ac.uk
  • Level of Achievement - This award may be achieved at Level 3 or 4. This would be negotiated following your initial assessment. If, in the future, you aspire to take a full teaching role you may progress to the diploma and claim accredited prior learning (APL), and 15 credits, for the first two units (PTLLS and Planning and Enabling Learning) within the CTLLS.
  • Minimum Qualification - you should be qualified / experienced in the subject that you intend to teach, have access to 30 teaching practice hours and possess reasonable levels of language, literacy and numeracy.
  • Development – if you are required to aspire to the full teaching role (DTLLS) you will only be able to carry forward 15 credits and receive accreditation of prior learning (APL) for the first two units (PTLLS and Planning and Enabling Learning) within CTLLS. You would need to ensure that you have access to 150 hours teaching practice and you may be required to do some top-up work to ensure they can meet the level 4 and 5 standards of the rest of the DTLLS qualification.

 

Course consists of 7 classroom based sessions and self-study plus 30 hours of teaching practice based in candidate's own work environment

City & Guilds 7305 Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS)

 

The City & Guilds 7305 (DTLLS) will help you develop all the skills you need to work as a full teacher in the lifelong learning sector - designing your own curricula and teaching a range of levels, subjects and learner types. The City & Guilds 7305 (DTLLS) course is for anyone working as or planning to become a full teacher in further, adult or continuing education. This Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector qualifies you for Qualified Teacher, Learning & Skills (QTLS) status.

  • Teaching Practice – you will be required to undertake a minimum of 150 hours teaching practice. This time falls into your non-contact hours within the programme, and excludes micro-teaching or teaching practice completed as part of the PTLLS unit within CTLLS, or C&G 7303 PTLLS Award. Practice completed for the theory assessment at either Level 3 or Level 4 for the Planning and Enabling Learning unit is also excluded. This teaching practice may be delivered across a range of cohorts.
  • Observation Requirement – you will need to be observed for at least eight hours over a minimum of eight occasions of your 150 teaching practice hours. Each observation must be for a minimum of 30 minutes and must take place in your place of work. Observations will be throughout the duration of the programme. It is recommended that most observations would be for a minimum of one hour. Teaching observation excludes observed practice completed as part of the PTLLS unit within DTLLS, or C&G 7303 PTLLS Award. The theory assessment in the Planning and Enabling Learning unit at Level 3 or Level 4, and mentor observations are also excluded.
  • Teaching Practice Portfolio – you will be required to keep one teaching practice portfolio across the full programme. The portfolio should be a concise log of teaching practice undertaken and should include your log of 150 hours teaching and evidence relating to your learners, session planning, delivery and evaluation. It will include at least eight observations of your teaching by the course team.

It is expected that the journal provides the basis for meeting the required assessment outcomes. Only one Reflective Learning Journal is required across the full programme. You may use your own journal format or the pro formas provided.

  • Minimum Qualification and Entry Level Requirements – you should be qualified to Level 3 or be able to demonstrate Level 3 skills in the subject that you intend to teach, have access to 150 teaching practice hours and possess reasonable levels of language, literacy, numeracy and ICT.

 

Course consists of 12 classroom based sessions and self-study plus 120 hours of teaching practice based in candidate's own work environment.
